From Lagaan, Iqbal, Chak De India! to Dangal: Top 10 Bollywood movies made on sports
Bollywood makes movies on all sorts of themes and genres,
but in current scenario, sports has taken an edge over others. The most awaited
movie of 2016 – DANGAL – is already running full houses and has been acclaimed
by the critics as well. It is biographical sport drama film directed by Nitesh
Tiwari. Dangal word itself depicts main component of the movie. Dangal means "fighting
competition".
Aamir Khan stars as Mahavir Singh Phogat who taught
wrestling to his daughters Geeta Phogat and Babita kumari, thus breaking the
walls of social custom that Indian women are not permitted to make their career
in sports, especially wrestling in state like Haryana. Aamir is said to have
gained 25 kilograms and then loose the same to justify the character of Mahavir
Singh Phogat in different stages of his life.
Lagaan: Lagaan is Indian epic Sports drama film starring
Aamir Khan and directed by Ashutosh Gowariker. Gracy Singh was in female lead
and British actors Rachel and Paul Blackthrone played the supporting roles. The
film is based on a group of villagers who play a cricket match against the
British officers to get their taxes waived off for the next three year. It
received awards at international films festivals as well as many Indian Film
Awards. Lagaan was a blockbuster. It was one of the biggest box office hits of
2001.This film will never fade from our memory soon. It was also nominated for
Oscars.
Ferrari Ki Sawaari: Ferrari ki sawaari is an emotional
sports drama film directed by Rajesh Mapuskar. The film is written by Rajesh
Mapuskar and produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra. The film has Sharman Joshi in the
lead. The film story is about a little boy, Kayo, who thinks of nothing but
playing cricket. His father, Rusy, thinks of nothing but his little boy. The
story moves around father’s struggle to fulfill his son's dream of playing at
the Lord's Cricket Ground. The film inspired parents to encourage their kid's
dreams.
Bhaag Milkha Singh: It is biopic of an Indian athlete Milkha
Singh also known as "The Fying Sikh" who was a champion runner and
who finished fourth in the Olympics. Farhan Akhtar was in the lead role as
Milkha Singh. This Film depicts the struggle of Milkha Singh to become an
Olympian. Milkha Singh performed very well at the box office and was declared
as 'Super Hit'. This film triggers enthusiasm among the youth to take up
sports.
Iqbal: This movie represents all the Indian children who
dream of playing for the Indian national side. Shreyas Talpade as Iqbal created
magic in the movie with his wonderful performance. The story revolves around a
deaf and a dumb boy who somehow makes it to Indian cricket team. The film
received the National Film Award for Best Film on other social issues. This
film also performed well at box office.
Chak De! India: It is a Indian sports film produced by
Aditya Chopra. It stars Shahrukh khan as Kabir Khan, former captain of the
Indian men's national field hockey team. After a disastrous loss to Pakistan,
Khan is excluded from the game and he and his mother are driven from the family
home by angry neighbours. Seven years later, to redeem himself, Khan becomes
the Coach of the Indian National women's hockey team. This film features the
rise of women's Indian hockey team and explores religious prejudice and legacy
of the partition of India. It won many awards, including national award for the
Best Popular film. The title track song Chak De! India has spread magic all
over the country as it almost became sports anthem of the country.
Dhan Dhana Dhan Goal: Produced by Ronnie Screwvala and
directed by Vivek Agnihotri, the film stars John Abraham, Bipasha Basu, Arshad
Warsi and Boman Irani. It is fictional
movie of Football club Southhall United, which is in danger of losing the lease
to its Football Stadium. This movie was good but unfortunately failed to
collect enough coins at the box office.
Paan Singh Tomar: Paan Singh Tomar is an Indian biographical
film based on the true story of the athlete Paan Singh Tomar. A soldier in the
Indian Army, he wins a gold medal at the Indian National Games but is forced to
become a notorious bandit. The film won the Best Feature Film and Best Actor at
the 60th National Film Awards 2012. The film starred Irrfan Khan in the lead.
It is an inspiring movie for young athletes.
MC Mary Kom: It is a Indian biographical sports film
directed by Omung Kumar.It is about 5-time women's world champion and Olympic
medal winning boxer, MC Mary Kom. Priyanka Chopra in the lead role performed
tremendously good and got a lot of appreciation for her acting in this film. It
is brilliant movie, a chronicle of the life of Indian Boxer Mary Kom, who did
lot of hardwork and went through several hardships to accomplish her dream.
This film depicts Kom's journey of becoming a boxer to her victory at 2008
World Boxing Championships at Ningbo. It also did magic at the box office.
Sultaan: This romantic sports drama film is directed by Ali
Abbas Zafar and produced by Aditya Chopra. It is story of Sultan Ali Khan
(Salmaan khan) and Aafra (Anuskha Sharma) as they both dreams of representing
India at the Olympics. Sultan did blockbuster business with 584 crore worldwide
and became the fourth highest grossing Indian film of all time.
MS Dhoni: The Untold Story: It is biographical sports film
written and directed by Neeraj Pandey. The movie is based on the life of Indian
cricketer Mahendra Singh Dhoni. The film stars Sushant Singh Rajput as Dhoni.
The story follows Dhoni’s life from childhood to winning short of the ICC World
Cup 2011. The film shows struggle of Dhoni during his early days of
career. Sushant Singh Rajput as Mahendra
Singh Dhoni did a brilliant work in the film. The film is a blockbuster hit of
2016.
